The Gut Co.
founder and naturopath, pernille jensen
What do you have for breakfast?
“I mostly have brunch as I try to push out breakfast to around 9-930. I'll have a smoothie with flaxseeds (for my hormones), FEED+REPAIR, a protein powder and either cacao or berries and coconut water. Maybe a mountain (Seed) bread with avocado and salmon + salt and lemon. On the weekends I will have poached/soft boiled eggs with mushrooms and leeks + pesto. I treat myself to a piece of sourdough on the odd occasion too.”
Why did you start The Gut Co?
“I wanted to provide the wider population with the same high potency products that were available only to naturopath clients at that point. I could see that the gut products available to the general public contained ingredients in too low dosages or just not very potent ingredients. Having researched gut health for over a decade I knew what ingredients had the scientific backing and wanted to bring this to the market in only 2 products. I also found my main challenges in treating people were compliance so I wanted to create a range that was actually delicious, something people would look forward to take. In addition, knowing the poor recycle rate here in AU, I wanted to avoid plastic tubs and create something sustainable, hence the ceramic vessels.”
What is your biggest health non-negotiable?
“That has got to be my gut heath as I know everything else depends on this. This means I will take extra precautions if I am having alcohol, I will take an extra scoop of REPAIR because I know the glutamine and collagen will look after my gut lining (alcohol makes small holes in the gut lining). I avoid refined sugar but allow myself some dark chocolate. I try to avoid gluten but allow a small amount. I eat lots of fat (never have an issue with rich curries or extra avocado or dressing on my salad. I eat vegetables for their nutritious content but equally for their fibre content which I know is highly beneficial for my gut.”
What is your favourite daily ritual?
“Exercising in the morning after I have rehydrated.”
What is your biggest indulgence?
“Loads of butter on a fresh piece of sourdough, oh how I love butter!”
What does luxury mean to you?
“Luxury to me is time. Time can be scarce and having time with family and friends is such a luxury that I appreciate above all else. These moments can be lavish lunches, dinner parties or simply just a day at the beach or in the garden with the kids and my husband. Time for long walks with the dog, time to read, time to learn new things.”
What does sustainability mean to you?
“It's funny my dad was always on about turning off the lights, closing doors and not using too much water even in the 70's so I think I have grown up with that mentality. For me it means making wise decisions; we don't need much and if we choose quality we reduce quantity and increase quality in our lives.
Just like the quality of our gut impacts the health of our bodies, the quality of our air and soil impacts the quality of our produce. We are interconnected with the environment around us and its insects, animals, soil and air. If we wish to improve our health we cannot merely focus on us as individuals. The reach is much farther and more complex.
The Gut Cø is dedicated to better practices when it comes to sustainability in regards to our products and our packaging, which is why we have chosen not to use plastic tubs, but offer you a beautiful canister that you can refill your product into at home. Our pouches have a low footprint, and we are actively looking into the use of compostable pouches that will disintegrate in your compost or bin.”
“We believe that our health depends on the health of our environment.”
